Description

An Early 20thC Paris School Oil on Canvas Landscape with Hand Carved Frame 67cm.

A superbly stylish early 20th century, Paris School oil on canvas landscape with influences of Impressionism and cubism, combining to create a striking subject.

The dramatic rural landscape features a typical rural France, probably Provence scene with cubist rocks set beneath a leaden sky, in contrast to the highlighted, colourful foreground applied in an impressionist style.., a combination of early 20th century techniques explored and experimented during this period by the Paris School artists around Montparnasse and Montmatre, Paris, the Ecole de Montmatre.

The oil on canvas landscape is signed to the lower right, the name isn’t distinguishable and therefore no research evidence of the artist.

Occupying an exquisite hand carved frame of the period, a solid wood frame of considerable quality, not a gesso example.

The Paris School refers to the diverse group of artists, both French and expatriates, working in Paris during the early decades of the 20th century who blended post-impressionist, expressionist, and modernist techniques.

These works typically utilised oil paint on stretched canvas, housed within hand-carved and gilded or toned wooden frames made from hardwoods such as pine, oak, or composition material.

Authenticity is assessed through examining the canvas weave, age-appropriate craquelure in the oil paint, stretcher frame construction, artist signatures, and the craftsmanship of the framing.

It serves as a strong focal point when hung against neutral walls, pairing well with transitional or maximalist decor to create visual depth and historical contrast.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight and high humidity, maintain stable indoor temperatures, and clean the surface gently with a soft, dry brush without using liquid solvents.
