FAQs

Early 20th century watercolours often captured pastoral and impressionistic scenes, focusing on atmospheric light, natural pigments, and traditional landscape subjects such as moorlands and rural countryside.

These pieces typically utilized high-cotton watercolour paper, animal-glue or synthetic water-based pigments, and were frequently housed in gilded wood frames with paper mounts and protective glazing.

Authenticity is assessed by examining paper texture and watermark ageing, the chemical composition of historical pigments, artist signatures, framing construction, and the presence of natural paper oxidation.

Pairing traditional framed art with neutral walls, minimalist framing layers, or contrasting contemporary furnishings creates a balanced aesthetic that highlights the heritage character of the piece.

Watercolours must be protected from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading and paper degradation, maintained in stable humidity conditions, and kept behind UV-filtering glass.
