Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

The Chesterfield sofa dates back to the 18th century, traditionally associated with the Earl of Chesterfield, and became a staple of Victorian interior design characterised by its deep button tufting and low seat base.

Authentic period Chesterfields are constructed with a solid hardwood frame, hand-tied coil springs, traditional horsehair or wool stuffing, and hand-applied deep buttoning upholstered in leather or heavy textiles such as velvet.

Authenticity is determined by examining the joinery, hand-stitched webbing, traditional stuffing materials, timber ageing, and the presence of hand-forged fixings or period castors on the legs.

Pairing a traditional buttoned sofa with minimalist modern elements, neutral walls, and contemporary lighting creates a balanced juxtaposition between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Preservation involves regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, and consulting professional conservators for textile cleaning and frame maintenance.
