Description

Late 19th century French cherrywood 3 seater bench or settle in this wonderful original leather. Good decor piece but it is practical too, very comfortable for 3 adults to sit on for a table, or would make a fabulous piece for an entrance hall.

Well carved throughout and is in good solid condition, with just two very small Knicks to the leather (front left corner and another right hand side of the back panel)…both are stable and will not increase in size.

Measuring:

39 1/2 inches or 100 cm high

Settles originated as wooden benches with high backs and arms, traditionally used in European farmhouses and inns to block draughts and provide communal seating near firesides.

Antique settles were primarily constructed from regional hardwoods such as oak, elm, pine, and cherrywood, often featuring upholstered leather or fabric seat pads and backrests in later iterations.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as pegged mortise and tenon joints, natural timber oxidisation, hand-turned spindles, and wear patterns consistent with age.

An antique settle can serve as a statement piece in a hallway, provide alternative dining seating, or add historical contrast against minimalist contemporary decor.

Maintain the wood with microcrystalline wax and nourish the leather periodically with a specialised leather conditioner, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity.
