Description

A sweetly naive oil on canvas depicting a brown and white horse in its stable. It is early 19th century and is housed in a gilded wooden frame. It could possibly do with a clean but we have resisted as that might diminish its charm. The actual canvas measures 25cm height and 32cm wide

Naive art is characterised by a non-professional, simplistic perspective and charming lack of formal academic training, often created by self-taught regional artists.

These works generally feature hand-stretched linen or cotton canvas, oil-based pigments derived from mineral and organic sources, and heavy moulded gesso or carved wood frames with gilt finishes.

Authenticity is assessed by examining canvas weave tightness, pigment oxidisation, stretcher bar construction, frame joinery, and the presence of fine craquelure across the paint surface.

An antique painting adds historical texture and focal weight when hung against neutral walls or placed on a mantlepiece to contrast with contemporary minimalist furnishings.

Preservation requires hanging away from direct sunlight and heat sources, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and dusting the canvas gently with a dry, soft brush without chemical cleaners.
