Mahogany became the premier cabinet timber during the 18th and 19th centuries, prized for its strength, rich colour, and ability to take a fine polish. Chests of drawers from this era evolved from functional storage pieces into sophisticated focal points for bedrooms and dressing rooms.

Authentic period pieces are typically constructed using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods such as oak or pine. Traditional joinery includes hand-cut dovetails on the drawer carcases and linings, alongside brass hardware and escutcheons.

Authentication involves examining the drawer construction for hand-cut dovetails, checking for irregular tool marks on secondary timbers, and assessing the natural patina and oxidisation of the wood. Period brasses and locks also provide key indicators of age.

An antique mahogany chest provides warmth and structural contrast in contemporary settings. It functions effectively as a bedroom storage unit or as a statement console in a living space, often paired with minimalist lamps or abstract art to balance traditional and modern elements.

Preserve the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking and fading. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally apply traditional beeswaxe to nourish the grain without using modern silicone-based polishes.
