Victorian portrait painting typically features realistic depictions of subjects, often focusing on bourgeois or aristocratic sitters with careful attention to clothing, expression, and chiaroscuro lighting.

These works are traditionally created using oil-based paints applied to stretched woven canvas, often supported by wooden stretcher bars and finished with a protective varnish layer.

Authenticity is determined by examining the canvas weave, age-related craquelure in the oil paint, hand-carved stretcher frames, and the type of pigments used, which align with historical palettes.

An antique portrait adds depth and historical contrast when hung against neutral or boldly painted walls, often grounding contemporary furniture schemes with a sense of narrative.

Preserve antique oil paintings by keeping them out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, and dusting the canvas gently with a soft, dry brush.
