FAQs

A duchesse brisee is a multi-part chaise longue or daybed system originating in 18th-century France, designed to provide a comfortable surface for reclining with a chair and footstool component often joined together or used separately.

Authentic pieces from this era typically feature carved hardwood frames such as beech or oak, often finished with painted or gilded surfaces, combined with woven cane panels and upholstered cushions.

Authentication involves examining the joinery methods, such as traditional mortise and tenon construction, inspecting the tool marks on hand-carved wood, and checking the wear patterns and oxidation on the painted or gilded finish.

Placing a historical piece against a neutral or boldly painted wall allows its refined neoclassical lines and textured caning to act as a statement focal point while blending with modern minimalist or eclectic decor.

Maintain these items by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood and cane from drying out, cleaning gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoiding harsh chemical polishes.
