Victorian furniture encompasses a range of revival styles that span the reign of Queen Victoria, generally characterised by substantial construction, dark woods like mahogany and walnut, and often elaborate decorative motifs drawing from Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo influences.

Cabinet makers of this era predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak, frequently incorporating hand-turned wooden knobs, dovetail joinery, and occasionally burl wood veneers on drawer fronts for added visual depth.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails on drawer boxes, tool marks on internal secondary woods, uniform ageing of the timber, and traditional finishing techniques like shellac-based french polish.

Pairing dark period wood with neutral walls and minimalist modern artwork creates a striking contrast that grounds contemporary living spaces while highlighting the craftsmanship of the piece.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping, and clean periodically using a soft, dry cloth or a quality micro-crystalline wax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
