Description

Albert George Stevens (1863-1925) was a founding member of the renowned Staithes Art Club (founded in 1901) based around Whitby. He was born in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire where his father was a doctor. Albert George Stevens studied at the Academy in Antwerp after the death of his father and tended to paint mostly in watercolour. His style was impressionistic, his subject matter mostly Yorkshire landscapes in which he sometimes captured the local children playing, the farmer leading his sheep, interiors with ladies taking tea or flower arranging or more domestic chores such as milking time. Stevens exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy, the Walker Gallery Liverpool, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the Yorkshire Union of Artists.

"A View of Whitby" is a good example of his watercolour painting. Measuring 10"x 8" the picture is signed lower right and is framed giving an overall size of 19"x 17". An attractive painting of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast.

Maritime watercolours typically capture ships, harbours, and coastal scenes using water-soluble pigments on paper, valued for their luminous washes and fine detailing.

Authentic pieces generally utilise watercolour pigments on rag paper or card, often mounted within wooden frames and protected behind glass.

Authentication involves examining paper type, watermark evidence, pigment oxidation, and artist signatures against known stylistic periods.

Pair traditional framed watercolours with simple, neutral mounts to anchor gallery walls or add historical depth to modern living spaces.

Protect watercolours from direct sunlight and excessive humidity by using UV-filtered glass and acid-free backing materials.
