FAQs

Victorian landscape painting often captures romanticised or realistic depictions of the British countryside, coastal scenes, and rural life, frequently focusing on atmospheric weather conditions and seasonal changes.

These works typically utilise oil paints applied to stretched canvas, often housed within moulded wood frames finished with gesso, gilding, or dark ebonising.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, stretcher bar construction, pigment composition, and the presence of age-related crazing or craquelure in the paint layer.

An antique oil painting provides a striking focal point when paired with clean, modern walls, allowing the historical narrative and ornate framing to stand out as a statement piece.

Preservation requires keeping the artwork out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and cleaning the surface gently with a soft, dry brush by a professional conservator.
