Traditionally commissioned as a wedding gift in rural France, marriage armoires were handcrafted to store the brides linen trousseau and often featured symbolic carvings representing fertility, love, and union.

These cabinets were predominantly built from solid regional hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or chestnut, utilising traditional joinery techniques like pegged mortise and tenon joints without modern metal fasteners.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-carved motifs, irregular board widths on the back panels, handmade iron or brass hardware, and visible tool marks or patination consistent with age.

An antique armoire provides practical storage while adding architectural warmth and historical contrast when paired with minimalist contemporary furniture or neutral colour schemes.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and periodically apply natural beeswax to nourish the finish rather than using silicone-based polishes.
