Nineteenth-century Dutch settees typically feature robust wooden frames, often crafted from oak or walnut, combined with enclosed upholstered bodies, scroll arms, and distinctive carved stretcher bases influenced by earlier regional traditions.

These pieces were constructed using traditional joinery methods with hardwood frames, hand-tied coil or webbed spring foundations, traditional stuffing materials such as horsehair, and finished with patterned woven textiles or damasks.

Authentication involves examining the hand-carved details of the wooden base, checking for period-appropriate joinery, assessing the ageing and wear of the timber, and inspecting internal webbing and stuffing materials for age.

A historic settee can serve as a focal point in a living room or hallway by pairing it with minimalist modern lighting and neutral walls to let the traditional craftsmanship stand out.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight to prevent textile fading, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to protect the wood, and using professional cleaning methods for historic fabrics.
