FAQs

Late 19th-century British watercolours are characterised by a focus on natural light, atmospheric conditions, and topographical accuracy, often capturing coastal scenes, rural landscapes, and historical landmarks with delicate washes and fine detail.

Artists during this period typically utilised hand-made rag paper, often made from cotton or linen fibres, along with gum arabic-based watercolours applied with sable or hog-hair brushes.

Authenticity is determined by examining the paper type for period watermarks, inspecting the pigments for age-appropriate oxidisation, looking for artist signatures or inscriptions, and checking for historical framing elements such as acidic backing boards.

An antique watercolour can be styled by pairing it with a simple, neutral mount and a restrained wooden or gilt frame, allowing the historic artwork to serve as a focal point on a gallery wall or a calm accent in a minimalist space.

Antique works on paper should be framed using acid-free archival materials, kept away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and displayed in environments with controlled humidity and temperature to avoid paper degradation.
