FAQs

The tallboy, or chest on stand, gained popularity during the late 17th and early 18th centuries in England. Burr walnut veneer became heavily favoured by cabinet makers during the William and Mary and Queen Anne periods due to its distinctive, highly figured grain patterns.

These pieces typically feature fine burr walnut veneers applied over secondary woods such as pine, oak, or deal. Construction often incorporates hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes, pegged framing, and traditional brass batwing or drop-loop handles.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the timber shrinkage, hand-cut dovetailing, patination of the walnut, and the construction of the drawer linings. Older pieces exhibit natural wear, tool marks consistent with period craftsmanship, and appropriate historical joinery methods.

A tallboy serves as a striking focal point in a bedroom, hallway, or living space, providing vertical storage without occupying excessive floor area. Pairing it with minimalist modern decor allows the rich texture and warm tones of the burr walnut to stand out.

Preservation involves maintaining stable room temperatures and avoiding direct sunlight, which can fade or dry out the delicate veneer. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help nourish the wood and maintain its protective finish.
