Description

Oil on canvas of a a river landscape signed by the French artist Georges Griois (1872 - 1944). The painting is mounted in a green painted frame with gilt slip.

Georges Griois was a post-impressionist painter who learned the art of drawing at a very young age at the School of Fine Arts in Boulogne-sur-Mer, notably with the famous Fauve painter Victor Dupont. He remained attached to this discipline throughout his life, which he put into practice both in the exercise of his profession as a decorator and as a painter. The man participated in the artistic life of Boulogne-sur-mer from 1901 by contributing to the founding of the Society of Fine Arts and Industrial Arts. Griois also participates in the intellectual and associative life of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

He exhibited in Paris, Lorient, Roubaix and became a member of the Salon des Indépendants from 1924 until 1944.

Griois draws and painted numerous paintings showing the harsh life of fishermen. To experience his art, he immersed himself in this part of Boulogne-sur-mer; he describes the streets of the sailors' quarter, the scenes of sea festivals, the portraits of these fishermen weathered by the salt and the cold, the herring boats on departure and arrival. It restores the activity of fishing with the modern vision of its time, located in the confrontation of sail and steam.

Georges Griois is buried in the Eastern Cemetery (Boulogne-sur-Mer).

An antique oil painting is a work of fine art executed in oil-based pigments on canvas or board, typically dating from over one hundred years ago, reflecting the artistic styles and techniques of its period of creation.

Traditional oil paintings are typically created using linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden stretcher frames, or occasionally wooden panels, with ground layers of gesso and pigments bound in linseed or walnut oil.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, the natural ageing and craquelure of the oil paint, stretcher bar marks, artist signatures or stamps, and the condition of the pigments under ultraviolet light.

An antique oil painting adds depth and character to a contemporary interior when displayed against neutral walls, either framed traditionally to create a focal point or hung unframed within a minimalist gallery wall arrangement.

Preservation requires hanging the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity, avoiding chemical cleaning agents, and consulting a professional art conservator for periodic dusting or restoration.
