FAQs

Victorian primitive painting is characterised by a lack of formal academic perspective, a flat or simplified rendering of space, and an honest, direct depiction of subjects that prioritises expression over strict technical realism.

These works were typically executed using oil-based pigments applied to stretched canvas, wooden panels, or heavy paper boards, often housed within moulded wooden or gesso frames.

Authenticity is assessed through material analysis, observing natural age-related craquelure in the oil paint, inspecting the stretcher bars or backing materials for period-appropriate construction, and examining wear patterns.

An antique portrait adds character when hung as a focal point on a neutral wall, or mixed within a gallery wall arrangement to create a layered, collected aesthetic that bridges historic and modern design.

Preservation requires displaying the artwork away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations, avoiding chemical cleaners on the painted surface, and consulting a professional restorer for cleaning or repairs.
