Vintage Tree Rug Ask the dealer for something similar
Description

Bakshaish is perhaps the oldest rug of the rug weaving villages of Persian Azerbaijan, Those items which have survived often reveal a uniquely painterly and abstracted interpretation of the ancient Persian tribal and classic designs, and can be truly charming. Today, the best examples are highly prized, so I was delighted to find this small carpet. The design is nothing short of sensational, highly graphic and beautifully drawn. One can imagine it working equally well on a floor or wall. The offset layout and different colours of the trees give the carpet a very dynamic impression. The fact that there are so few filler ornaments enhances the visual impact. It is a truly painterly rug. The simplicity of the borders suggests that the weaver was aware of this and wished only to create an appropriate frame for her work. Both decorative and collectible, this special piece deserves to find a good home. Some restoration work has been undertaken to a high standard. Professionally cleaned.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Persian Carpet to the 1870s.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Bakshaish carpets originate from the Heriz district in north-west Persia and are characterised by geometric interpretations of traditional motifs, often featuring large-scale designs and a distinct terracotta or madder-dyed ground.

These carpets are typically constructed using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation, employing the symmetrical Turkish knot, and are coloured using natural dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the irregularities in the hand-spun wool, natural colour variations known as abrash, the structure of the foundation, and the organic asymmetry inherent in tribal and village weaving.

An antique carpet can serve as a foundational anchor in a modern room, contrasting clean-lined contemporary furniture with its rich texture, history, and organic geometric patterns.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional cleaning when necessary, avoiding direct exposure to strong sunlight to prevent fading, and using a breathable underlay.
