This nineteenth-century Black Forest sculpture takes the form of a carved walnut wood figure depicting a large eagle with dramatic, outspread wings standing upon a naturalistic rockwork base, with a small deer positioned below on the rocky terrain. The natural grain of the timber displays a warm brown tone with fine feather and fur texturing across both animals, and the circular wooden plinth forms the base of the work. Measuring 56 cm high, 20 cm wide and 20 cm deep, the object creates a striking focal point with a highland hunting lodge design vibe. Suitable for display in a living room, study or hallway, the piece sits well atop a sideboard, large console table or a fitted bookcase shelf where its detailed animal carvings can be clearly observed.

Black Forest wood carving originated in Switzerland, particularly around Brienz, during the early 19th century. Known for intricate depictions of native wildlife, flora, and naturalistic scenes, these carvings were produced by skilled artisans and became sought-after decorative items across Europe.

Carvers predominantly utilised local hardwoods native to the region, with walnut, lime wood (linden), pearwood, and oak being the most common choices. Walnut was particularly favoured for its fine grain, durability, and rich brown tone that allowed high levels of detailed hand-carving.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature high-level hand carving, realistic anatomical proportions, and textured surfaces representing feathers, fur, or rockwork. Genuine antique pieces usually show natural patination, slight surface wear in high-touch areas, and subtle hand-chiselled tool marks rather than machine finishing.

A carved wooden sculpture functions as a focal point when placed on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or inside a dark wood cabinet. Setting it against neutral background tones or textured walls allows the detailed woodwork and warm timber tones to be highlighted.

Keep the wood sculpture in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, radiators, or moist air to prevent cracking or warping. Dust gently using a soft, dry bristle brush, and apply a small amount of clear beeswax paste every few years to nourish the wood.
