Nineteenth-century Ottoman watercolours often document significant architectural landmarks, religious sites, and cultural shifts during the late Ottoman period, serving as both artistic expressions and historical records.

These works typically utilised handmade paper or parchment, natural mineral and plant-based pigments for the watercolours, and occasionally gold leaf or ink for calligraphy and detailing.

Authenticity is assessed through the examination of paper fibre composition, pigment ageing characteristics, traditional calligraphic scripts, framing methods, and provenance documentation verified by specialists.

An antique painting can serve as a focal point on a neutral wall, paired with minimalist contemporary framing or kept in its period frame to create a curated, eclectic contrast in a study or living space.

Historic watercolours require framing with UV-protective glass, controlled ambient humidity between 45 and 55 percent, and placement away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment degradation and paper foxing.
