Plumbago is an early form of pencil drawing utilising powdered lead and carbon, popular during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries for detailed monochrome portraits and illustrations.

These historical artworks are executed on laid paper or vellum using graphite or lead-based media, frequently housed within wooden or brass frames with glass protection.

Authentication involves examining the paper texture for period-accurate watermarks, inspecting the medium for genuine graphite or plumbago characteristics under magnification, and evaluating the construction of the frame.

Display the artwork on a neutral wall space or within a gallery wall arrangement, ensuring it is positioned away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the delicate paper.

Preservation requires framing with acid-free materials, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and keeping the artwork away from direct ultraviolet light exposure.
