This early Karadagh long rug from the mid 19th century measures 385 cm high, 115 cm wide, and 1.5 cm deep, presenting a tribal Persian style hand-knotted wool construction. The dark navy blue field contains repeating geometric medallions, diamond lattice patterns, and stylised floral motifs, framed by intricate multi-border guards in vibrant red, white, and blue hues. Additional visible details include the dense, glossy pile, supersaturated dyes with touches of pink, yellow, and green, and varied geometric fill motifs across the surface. Suitable for placement in a hallway, long corridor, or living space, the runner offers warmth and pattern underfoot. The thick pile remains intact across the length of the rug, preserving the traditional village craftsmanship and rich multicolour palette for contemporary interior settings.

Karadagh rugs originate from the mountainous northwestern region of Iran, bordering Caucasia, and are historically known for combining Persian weave structures with bold, geometric Caucasian-inspired motifs.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-spun wool piles knotted onto wool or cotton foundation warps and wefts, utilising natural vegetable dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects.

Authentication relies on examining irregular knot density on the reverse, natural variations in vegetable dye colours known as abrash, hand-finished selvages, and organic wear patterns consistent with age.

An antique runner adds texture and historical contrast to modern spaces, working effectively as a grounding element in hallways, corridors, or transitional spaces alongside minimalist furniture.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without beater bars, professional hand washing using pH-neutral solutions, and the use of breathable underlays to prevent friction and slippage.
