We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Nineteenth-century watercolours typically emphasise atmospheric effects, fluid washes, and naturalistic depictions of light and topography, often capturing picturesque rural or mountainous scenery.

Artists of this era generally utilised hand-made rag paper composed of cotton or linen fibres, along with natural gum arabic watercolours applied with fine sable or hog-hair brushes.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct paper ageing, oxidisation of pigments, hand-written signatures in graphite or ink, and often watermarks consistent with 19th-century paper mills.

A period watercolour pairs effectively with neutral walls and simple framing, providing a grounding focal point that complements both traditional and modern minimalist spaces.

To prevent fading and degradation, antique watercolours must be displayed away from direct sunlight, framed with acid-free mounting materials, and kept in environments with stable humidity and temperature.
