How do I make modern mattresses fit old beds?

Most antique frames sit slightly outside modern standard dimensions. You usually need a custom slatted base to bridge the gap between the original side rails. Once the custom base is secure, you can drop a standard mattress on top. Some dealers sell these adapted bases ready made.

We live in a narrow terraced house with tight stairs and I am worried a massive wooden headboard simply won't go round the corners, do they come apart at all?

Most wooden frames dismantle into four main pieces. The headboard, footboard, and two side rails separate when you undo the corner bolts. The headboard itself is usually one solid piece. If your stairs have a sharp turn and a low ceiling, you need to measure the diagonal clearance carefully. Metal beds are often easier to move. Some iron and brass headboards unbolt into smaller vertical sections.

Can you polish tarnished brass bed parts?

You can polish solid brass using standard metal wadding and a soft cloth. Some parts have a clear lacquer applied over the metal. You have to strip peeling lacquer off before the brass underneath will shine.

My side rails seem to bow quite a bit in the middle when two of us lie on the bed, is there a safe way to fix this without drilling holes in the antique wood?

Long side rails often sag under modern weights. They were originally designed to hold feather mattresses rather than heavy pocket-sprung equivalents. You can fix this by adding a central support beam. Cut a piece of timber to run from the headboard to the footboard, resting on the floor with a couple of block legs. Rest your slatted base on this new central beam as well as the side rails. It takes the pressure off the antique joints without altering the original wood.
