Chippendale Period Secretaire Chest on Chest

18th century
Description

Circa 1760. An exceptional quality George III Chippendale period mahogany secretaire chest on chest. With a classic cornice incorporating stylish dentilled mouldings, blind fretwork with ribbed canted corners. With a configuration of two short over three further graduating drawers, each retaining its original escutcheons and gilded swan neck handles with elegant but simple back plates. The secretaire drawer opens to reveal a well fitted interior with pigeon holes and various drawers with neat gilded axehead drops. In the center is a small inlaid door with two inlaid panels each side, there is a small brass pin on the inside – when pulled it releases the panels. Beneath the top section is a moulding and, in the bottom, three large full-length drawers. Beneath the bottom drawer is further moulding and the chest stands on four massive shaped bracket feet. The chest retains its original colour and patination.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chippendale chest on chest, or tallboy, features two stacked drawer units, often incorporating a fold-out writing desk or secretaire drawer alongside architectural mouldings and decorative carving.

Primary timbers were predominantly solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine drawer linings, and cast brass drop handles.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber construction, original cast brass hardware, bracket feet, and period decorative details such as blind fretwork or fluted quarter-columns.

Positioning a tall mahogany chest against a neutral wall balances its vertical scale, allowing it to function as a focal storage piece in master bedrooms, hallways, or studies.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply beeswax periodically along the wood grain, keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
