ANTIQUE #SA990315

An Arts And Crafts Style Iron Fire Guard

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Jeckyll & Co

Handmade, unusual, and stylish.

The design recalls the so-called ''Queen Mary Grate'' made by the firm of Robert Adams of Shandwick Place, Edinburgh (see the image of the grate in Queen Mary''s Apartments, the Palace of Holyroodhouse)*....however I''m not sure if this is the inspiration.

Construcuted by sandwiching a fine mesh between an arched frame and riveting together. The hinges at the back of the screen are spot welded and the frame folds completely flat.

Condition: This is a solid, robust spark guard. The mesh has a very small hole in the front panel (sixth image), and there is some superficial tarnishing in places.

Reliable transport can be easily arranged at cost price throughout the UK, please let me know if you would like a quote, or have any other questions. It could also be posted, cost approximately £35.

* Detail of a photograph from ''Scottish Houses and Gardens'' by Ian Gow, published by Aurum Press from the Country Life archives.
