FAQs

Oushak carpets originate from the town of Usak in western Turkey, dating back to the Ottoman Empire. They are historically renowned for their silky wool, luminous vegetable dyes, and large-scale geometric or floral motifs that differ from the tighter patterns of Persian carpets.

Authentic pieces are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation threads, often incorporating cotton for the warp and weft. Natural vegetable and insect dyes, such as madder root and walnut husk, create their characteristic soft, muted palette.

Authentication involves examining the hand-knotted fringe, irregular knot density on the reverse, and the natural abrash or color variation in the wool. Early 20th-century examples typically exhibit organic vegetable fading, softer handle, and minor wear consistent with age.

An antique Oushak rug adds textural warmth and historical contrast to contemporary spaces. It works effectively layered over neutral wooden flooring or stone tiles, grounding minimalist furniture and softening clean architectural lines.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar to protect the wool pile. Professional specialist cleaning should be undertaken periodically, and the rug should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent dye degradation.
