Description

A cold painted Vienna bronze figure of a stalking fox. Very finely detailed and modelled with lots of movement.  Well cast and in excellent original condition with light wear to some of the cold painting.

The tradition of Vienna Bronze can be traced to the middle of the 19th century. Around 50 manufacturers resided in Vienna at the turn of the century, as small Austrian bronze sculpture with its fine detail enjoyed great popularity.

In the late 19th Century a number of Austrian bronze foundries situated in Vienna and the Austrian-Bohemian border began to specialise in the technique of ‘cold painted’ processes. This naturalistic finish was created by painting the raw bronze with several layers of special and secretive enamel colours called ‘dust paints’, which resulted in fine life like studies of the various models and sculptures. This process was often applied when the cast was still warm, the natural shrinkage on cooling adding to the permanency of the colour as it annealed the paint firmly into the metal. As the colour was not ‘fired’ this process is referred to as ‘cold painted’.

Excellent original condition with light wear to some of the cold painting

Cold painted Vienna bronze refers to late 19th and early 20th-century Austrian bronze sculptures that were cast and then decorated with multiple layers of dust paint applied without heat, making the finish delicate and distinctive.

These pieces were typically cast in bronze or brass using the lost-wax casting method, then hand-painted with oil-based paints and patinated to create realistic animal textures and tones.

Authentic pieces often feature fine hand-chased detailing under the paint, realistic anatomical proportions, and occasionally foundry marks or Geschutzt stamps indicating Austrian registration, though many smaller cabinet pieces remain unsigned.

Such decorative objects work well as points of interest on a bookshelf, desk, or mantelpiece, where their scale allows them to add character without overwhelming the room layout.

Preservation requires avoiding all water, solvents, and abrasive cleaners, as the cold paint technique is fragile; dusting gently with a soft, dry brush is the only recommended method.
