Rosewood Wellington Chest

19th century
For Sale by Moxhams Antiques
Description

Victorian figured rosewood Wellington chest with good architectural features including well carved corbels at the top & bottom of the pilasters, a slanted cornice moulding above the frieze, raised mouldings around the pilasters and graduated drawers. I also like the hinged compartment under the top, the unusual feature of the locking pilaster in 2 halves with 2 locks, the panelled back, the mahogany drawer linings and the good original colour.

This is a rather better model than usual and a slightly larger than normal size.

Circa 1850

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow chest of drawers named after the First Duke of Wellington following his victory at Waterloo in 1815. Designed for military officers and compact quarters, these chests feature stacked drawers secured by a single hinged locking bar on the side.

They were predominantly crafted from high-grade hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, often finished with polished wood veneers. Construction typically features hand-cut dovetail joints, solid oak or pine drawer linings, turned wood handles, and brass hinges on the locking bar.

Authentic pieces feature a side pilaster hinged on one side with a lock, which swings across the drawer edges to prevent them from opening. Look for original hand-turned wooden knobs, period dovetail joinery, carved side corbels, and solid wood drawer bases showing natural age shrinkage.

Due to its slender vertical proportions, a Wellington chest fits well into tight alcoves, narrow hallways, or home offices. Pairing dark rosewood tones with crisp modern paint colours or minimal architectural moulding creates a striking contrast between classical and modern aesthetics.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the rosewood veneer from drying, fading, or cracking. Clean dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the luster.
