Pair of decorative mid C19th brass and cast-iron Sphinx andirons.

Well-modelled pair of polished brass Sphinxes mounted on sloping-sided rectangular cast-iron plinth bases . Probably designed to sit within a fire-place hearth , but would work equally as well on a mantelpiece or console table .

The undersides bearing Victorian ‘kite’ registration marks . Produced to reflect the fashionable taste for ‘Egyptomania’ and the desire to reflect the discoveries of the ancient Kingdom and perhaps the victory of Nelson in the ‘Battle of the Nile’ against Napoleon’s navy.
