Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Scottish vernacular dresser base from 1860 follows a traditional farmhouse design, constructed from pine with a natural wood and off-white painted finish. The piece has a low gallery back above a natural timber worktop, three long drawers fitted with brass bail handles, and three panelled cupboard doors with small turned wooden knobs. Raised on a plinth base with a shaped apron, the painted surfaces show natural wear and distressing throughout. Practical dimensions of 104 cm high, 232 cm wide and 70 cm deep provide ample surface space and storage. Suitable for use in a country kitchen, dining room or large hallway, the dresser base serves as a traditional storage unit or serving surface. The combination of the scrubbed top and painted body suits rustic interiors, offering substantial capacity for tableware, linens or provisions. The sturdy construction and classic proportions make it a functional addition to both period properties and contemporary country homes.

FAQs

A Scottish dresser base is a practical 19th-century storage unit constructed primarily for country kitchens, featuring a flat wooden top, upper drawers for utensils, and lower enclosed cupboards for larger kitchen items.

These pieces were typically crafted using native softwoods like pine or deal, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, mortise and tenon framing, and protective coats of milk paint or oil-based paint.

Authentic original painted finishes display uneven wear concentrated around knobs and edges, layers of historic paint tone within crevices, and natural wood oxidation in exposed areas.

Positioned in a contemporary kitchen, dining area, or hallway, a painted dresser base introduces historical texture when paired with modern ceramics, minimalist artwork, and neutral wall paints.

Maintain the finish by wiping gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays, and applying a light coat of clear beeswax once a year to protect friable paint without altering the patina.
