Rare Antique Ziegler Carpet

19th century
Description

A rare square grey/pale blue background antique Ziegler carpet from the famed and world renown Ziegler & Co workshop in Sultanabad, Persia dating from 1883-1890.  The reason this carpet is rarer than most antique Ziegler's is the open plain field and colour.  To produce this rare dye was an expensive process back in the late 19th century, also it was a colour rarely produced.  The Ziegler & Co workshop produced some of the best dyes of the late 19th century and they have faded and oxidised over the years adding tremendous character.

This antique Ziegler carpet has had some restoration over the years, some preservation work to the areas in the borders but done to an exceptionally high standard.  Areas of wear are visible in the main plain field colour, but it actually adds to the character and look of this sublime piece.  Ziegler & Co workshop carpets are one of the most collectable and desirable carpets in the world, this is an exceptional one and we are privileged to have it in our inventory.

A personal home visit can be selected from our website, choosing an ideal day and time for us to visit you with this carpet.  We have offered this service for over 30 years, we can help you choose the ideal carpet for your home.  You can also request a showroom visit if preferred, we are open Monday to Saturday by appointment.

In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with beautiful, all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ziegler carpets were manufactured in Sultanabad, Persia, starting in the late nineteenth century by the Anglo-Swiss firm Ziegler & Co. to suit European interior tastes, characterized by large-scale floral motifs, muted colour palettes, and open central fields.

These carpets were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a cotton foundation, using natural vegetable dyes that age into softer tones over time.

Authentic examples feature soft vegetable-dyed colours, delicate abrash tonal variations, flexible hand-knotted foundations, and wide floral borders surrounding plain or lightly pattern-filled fields.

The neutral ground and subtle borders of a Ziegler carpet allow it to anchor a room effortlessly, pairing well with natural timber, neutral upholstery, and both traditional and contemporary furnishings.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating brush, rotate the carpet periodically to ensure equal wear and light exposure, and seek specialist hand-washing services for cleaning.
