In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
It also comes with a working key.

Inside, the lid of the box is lined with a deep blue leather material with a gilt tooled edge which pulls down to give storage space behind. It comes with a pair of glass inkwells and there is a lidded compartment, stamp slope and a pen tray. The interior surface is covered in matching blue leather with ornate gilt tooling which folds out further to reveal a larger sloped writing surface. This is covered in a similar deep blue leather but isn't tooled. Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding three small drawers which springs open when a piece of wood by the inkwell is pushed.

It is in very good condition for its age. There are no major damages to the wood exterior, just some small knocks and minor signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. There is a historic shrinkage split in the top of the box which has been repaired at some point and overall it still displays well. The box is generally clean and tidy inside. There have been some small repairs to the leather surfaces and there are other minor signs of age and use but nothing untoward.
The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.
