Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French genre painting focused on everyday scenes, rural life, and historical narrative subjects rendered with meticulous detail. Artists utilized watercolour to achieve subtle tonal gradients and light effects, producing smaller-scale works intended for private residence display.

These works typically consist of watercolour pigments applied to woven or laid paper. Frames from this period were commonly constructed from wood featuring plaster or compo mouldings coated in gold leaf or gilt paint, protected by clear window glass.

Authentic pieces generally display period-correct paper aging, hand-signed signatures, and delicate brushwork without mechanical dot matrices. The framing often shows hand-carved details, timber backing boards, and natural oxidisation on the gilt surfaces.

A symmetrical pair works effectively hung side-by-side above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table. Combining ornate gilt-framed classical art with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a balanced, curated contrast.

Keep watercolours away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading, foxing, and paper distortion. Clean the outer glass gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners near the wooden gilt frame.
