FAQs

Originating in the 19th century during the Victorian era, the chiffonier evolved from a small sideboard with a raised back, commonly used in dining rooms and drawing rooms for serving food and storing silverware.

These sideboards are typically constructed using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, featuring hand-carved details, fielded panels, and traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, natural wax patination, aging characteristics in the wood grain, and original hardware fixings or ghost marks from removed fittings.

Pair the dark wood tones with neutral wall colours, contemporary metallic lighting, and minimalist ceramics or abstract art to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
