This Victorian chest of drawers dates from 1920 and takes the form of an English country house storage piece constructed from birdseye maple timber in a warm honey colour. The exterior displays a prominent birdseye figure pattern complemented by dark wood inlaid stringing borders, a low upstand gallery with carved detailing, and raised columns flanking the front corners. Further ornamentation includes turned wooden knobs on each of the three upper and two lower drawers, and a stepped plinth base. Measuring 86 cm high, 114 cm wide, and 56 cm deep, the unit provides versatile surface display space and deep drawer storage. It suits placement in a traditional bedroom, dressing room, or hallway as a functional linen or clothing cabinet.

Victorian cabinetmakers favoured birdseye maple for its distinctive figure, which features small, swirling patterns resembling tiny bird eyes. Frequently paired with contrasting inlay stringing or darker hardwood accents, it was widely used on high-end bedroom cabinetry and chests throughout the nineteenth century.

Chests from this period typically feature solid wood framing with hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, thin cut veneers applied over solid timber substrate, and solid wooden drawer linings. Hardware often consisted of turned timber knobs or cast brass handles fixed with threaded bolts.

Authentic pieces display signs of age such as hand-planed backboards, irregular dovetail joints, natural timber oxidation, and slight shrinkage along seam lines. Original finishes often display a soft wax patina rather than a high-gloss synthetic lacquer.

A warm timber chest provides visual grounding in modern spaces when positioned against neutral walls or paired with contemporary lighting. The detailed figure of birdseye maple complements both minimalistic interiors and traditional layered design schemes.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, veneer lifting, or uneven fading.
