Mid C19th Italian ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir bronze study of “The Apollo Belvedere “ , after the antique.
Exceptional quality cast bronze reduction of the iconic 2nd century AD Roman marble statue of Apollo , the original now exhibited in the Belvedere courtyard of the Vatican Pio -Clementine Museums in Rome, Italy .
Known therefore as the “Apollo Belvedere” or “Pythian Apollo “ , the god is depicted in contrapposto pose , naked having had a bow in his hand , a cloak over his shoulder and wearing a quiver , leaning against a tree stump . The god is portrayed as having just fired an arrow slaying the legendary python or serpent guarding Delphi in mythology .
Revered by classicists and collectors , examples of the statue can be found in the leading museums , art collections and noble houses of the world.
Excellent rich colour and patina with minor high-points . A particularly heavily-cast bronze of high quality and definition .
