The original marble statue of Diana of Gabii was discovered in 1792 near Rome and is attributed to the ancient Greek sculptor Praxiteles. During the nineteenth century, reduced bronze castings of the statue became prominent as Grand Tour souvenirs and decorative classical sculptures.

Sculptures of this type were typically produced using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand casting method in copper alloy bronze. After casting, the surface was hand-chased to refine details and chemically treated to create a dark protective patina.

Authentic period castings feature sharp hand-chiselled details in the drapery and hair, evidence of historical hand-finishing, and age-appropriate wear to the patina around raised surfaces. They also display characteristic weight and construction details on the underside of the base.

Classical bronzes are often displayed on mantelpieces, marble-topped sideboards, or within book-lined shelving units. Their dark tones create strong visual contrast against light stone, painted plaster, or natural timber backdrops.
