This Japanese Meiji period jardiniere planter bowl dates to circa 1920. Fashioned from dark brown bronze, the body carries a wide polychrome band of champleve enamel showing archaic taotie motifs in blue, green, yellow, red and white. Four flared cast feet support the vessel, each decorated with matching enamel scrollwork down the front, while the upper rim features a simple flat overhang. The structure measures 40 cm in diameter including the feet by 30 cm high, with a 30 cm mouth diameter and a weight of 5.6 Kg. Suitable for placement on a sturdy sideboard top in a conservatory or living space, the bowl is designed to hold an inserted plant pot, aided by a large circular hole in the bottom created during manufacture. The dark surface shows minor historic knocks, marks and repairs, alongside small areas of pitting and enamel losses. The overall form provides a solid container for interior foliage display.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid chemical cleaners, abrasive polishes, or prolonged water exposure, as these can strip the historical patina or damage fragile enamel cells.

An antique bronze jardiniere creates a striking focal point when placed on a sideboard, console, or hallway table. It can be used as a standalone decorative statement or potted with architectural greenery such as orchids or ferns to contrast the dark patinated metal.

Authentic early 20th-century Japanese champleve pieces exhibit substantial weight, natural bronze patination, and minor surface imperfections in the enamel work, such as pitting. The underlying cast metal often features traditional archaistic scrollwork or mask motifs in low relief.

These planters were typically cast from heavy bronze alloy and decorated with vitreous glass enamel powders. The enamel was fused into pre-formed cells in the metal body before being polished flush with the bronze surface.

Champleve is a decorative technique where carved or cast recesses in a metal surface are filled with vitreous enamel paste and fired. In late Edo and Meiji period Japan, craftsmen adapted this method to embellish bronze vessels with intricate, multi-coloured geometric and archaistic patterns.
