Antique English Georgian Pewter Ladle ~ Dixon & Son

19th century
Description

A scarce Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Pewter Ladle, the handle stamped Dixon & Son { 1823 - 1829 } ~ Cotterell O.P. 1394. Pewter ladles, once everyday items, are now difficult to source in today's market, and this one is here offered both fully marked and in excellent condition. The entry in Cotterell regarding this firm makes for interesting reading, but whilst technically faultless, the fact is that in today's world, ie. some one hundred years later, Britannia Metal is regarded by most collectors as a grade of pewter.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian pewter kitchenware, produced between 1714 and 1830, is characterised by functional forms, substantial weight, and understated classical lines designed for daily household use.

Traditional pewter from this era is an alloy primarily composed of tin, combined with copper, lead, or antimony, often cast in moulds and finished by hand turning or hammering.

Authentic pieces typically feature touchmarks or maker marks stamped into the metal, distinct oxidised patina, heavy construction, and visible hand-casting seam lines.

An antique pewter ladle can be displayed on a sideboard top inside a modern kitchen, hung on a utensil rack, or incorporated into a wall display of historic metalwork.

Preserve antique pewter by washing gently with warm water and mild dish soap, avoiding abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, and drying thoroughly to maintain its natural patina.
