Description

Outstanding Brass Pompeji Kantharos Cup. This heavy brass cup was acquired from the estate of a late gentleman who acquired this cup in the 1930's and is believed to be a collector's item from the Grand Tour. It is a copy of an original cup discovered in Pompeji and now exhibiedt at the Archaeological Museum in Naples. It depicts Centaurs and it's Putti attendants. Total weight ca 770 grams, height ca 13 cm and top diameter ca 11 cm.

A kantharos is an ancient Greek or Roman vessel characterised by high loop handles and a deep bowl set upon a pedestal foot. Replicas inspired by original artifacts excavated at Pompeii became popular Grand Tour souvenirs during the nineteenth century.

These decorative vessels were traditionally cast in brass or bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques. Relief ornamentation depicting mythological figures was chased or finished by hand to replicate historic metalworking methods.

Authentic nineteenth-century Grand Tour items display detailed hand-chased relief work, threaded or pegged construction, and genuine oxidisation in the recesses. Natural surface wear and crisp casting differentiate historical items from modern mass-produced reproductions.
