Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An armoire is a tall, freestanding cupboard or wardrobe originally created in 16th-century France to store armour and weapons. Over time, it evolved into a prominent piece of bedroom furniture used for storing clothing, linens, and personal possessions, often featuring ornate carvings, mirrors, and gilded accents.

Traditional 19th-century armoires were constructed using fine hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with flame veneers. Joinery relied on hand-cut dovetail joints, brass hardware, wire grilles, bevelled glass mirrors, and cast bronze or ormolu mounts.

Authentic 19th-century armoires feature hand-cut dovetail drawers, irregular backboards showing saw marks, aged mercury glass or original bevelled mirrors, and heavy iron or brass lock mechanisms. Original gilt mounts will exhibit natural patination rather than uniform modern gold paint.

A large mahogany armoire serves as a striking focal point in a master bedroom, grand hallway, or dressing room. To balance its heavy visual weight, pair it with minimalist contemporary lighting, light-toned walls, and neutral upholstery.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking and veneer lift. Clean the polished wood with a soft microfiber cloth and apply high-quality beeswax annually, while dusting gilt mounts gently with a dry soft brush without harsh metal cleaners.
