Fine Quality Figured Walnut Pedestal Davenport Desk

A fine quality Early Victorian Davenport of classic elegant pedestal design. The desk in design is much more closely related to Regency pedestal versions and may suggested a provincial manufacture or earlier date. The whole is in beautifully figured walnut and has a great light colour and wonderful original patina. The desk has two banks of drawers on either side one of which are false drawers and the other true. The drawers all have original knobs and working locks they are lined with oak and pine and interestingly where they are pine, they are lined with paper painted to mimic oak all of which is original. The desk top has a low wooden gallery and a fetching blue tooled leather surface. The interior has four drawers and has been lined with marbled paper at some point in the past. The desk section slides forward to allow the user to sit and comfortably work. The whole is quite large for a davenport but this makes it very usable as a desk, which most aren’t. The Davenport has a great simplicity and elegance of design and would work well in any period interior. C.1850.
