A high quality and supremely elegant late 19th century satinwood desk of practical proportions attributed to Maples. The leather-lined surface of the shaped top s surrounded by a wide cross-banding of satinwood edged with tulip wood and sits above a central drawer over the kneehole, which is flanked by two bow-fronted end-drawers which are decorated with further cross-banding and embellished with painted flowerheads surrounding inset oval centres. These are supported on eight slender, square tapering legs which are united by raised umbrella-shaped stretchers which support small rectangular under-tiers. Drawers are fully lined in fine mahogany.
 
Maples of Tottenham Court Road were synonymous with furniture of the higher order from the early 19th century until the twentieth century, when the merged with Waring & Gillows.
