Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fire dogs, also called andirons, are paired metal supports used in open fireplaces to hold wooden logs off the hearth floor. Raising the fuel allowed air to circulate underneath, creating a more efficient fire while preventing burning wood from rolling forward into the room.

16th-century fire dogs were primarily crafted from cast iron produced in charcoal-fuelled blast furnaces, or wrought iron worked by hand. Cast iron examples were formed using sand or loam moulds, allowing decorative relief patterns, heraldic symbols, and dates to be cast directly into the metal body.

Authentic Elizabethan pieces typically display thick, heavy iron castings with uneven surface textures, pit marks, and signs of hand-finished seams. Look for period-appropriate decorative motifs such as arched bases, straight columnar shafts, strapwork, and cast dates or initials integrated into the original mould.

In contemporary interiors, antique firedogs can be placed inside an active or decorative open fireplace alcove to add historical depth and architectural weight. They can support logs within a modern inglenook or serve as standalone sculptural metalwork pieces inside a non-working hearth.

Cast iron should be kept dry to prevent active corrosion and surface rust. Loose debris can be removed with a stiff bristle brush, while light surface rust can be treated with wire wool and finished with a coat of traditional black grate polish or microcrystalline wax to protect the metal.
