Description

A superb quality 19th Century freestanding inlaid mahogany kidney shaped desk, the top having the original green leather writing surface decorated with blind and gold tooling, the edge of the top having boxwood and chequered inlay, a selection of nine graduated mahogany lined drawers with original oval brass plate handles, the drawer fronts having wonderful inlay decoration, it’s also worth mentioning that the four drawers on either side are locked when the central drawer is closed, the back of the desk having three compartments which have two fixed shelves, supported on a shaped plinth base. The desk in is excellent condition and is profusely inlaid all over. Circa 1890.

The desk was once owned by Sir John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury, 4th Baronet (30th April 1834 – 28th May 1913) (see the portrait of Sir John which comes with the desk) who was elected to parliament for Maidstone, Kent (1870 and 1874) During that period he secured passage of the Bank Holidays Act (1871) Elected to parliament for the University of London (1880-1900), he influenced passage of the Bills of Exchange and Ancient Monuments Protection Acts (1882) and the Shop Hours Act (1889)
