A Mid 19th Century Continental Settee

19th century
Description

A mid 19th century continental settee. Made from well figured Cuban mahogany and of excellent quality, the settee has carved decoration to the arm uprights and front legs. It is of a good colour and possibly Swedish in origin. It needs some very minor attention and possibly recovering (it is as I bought it and would look great with a good top fabric). It can be free standing or placed against a wall and at only 25.5 inches deep is unusually shallow.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Continental settees from the mid 19th century often incorporate elements of Biedermeier, Empire, or Neo-Classical design, characterised by architectural profiles, prominent wood veneers, and structured upholstery.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, frequently accented with figured flame veneers, hand-carved decorative motifs, traditional coil springs, and horsehair padding.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-cut joinery, hand-carved accents with subtle variations, period wear on non-exposed underside framing, and traditional webbing beneath the upholstery.

Pair the structured silhouette of a period settee with contemporary accent tables, modern lighting, or neutral wall finishes to allow the timber grain and architectural form to serve as a focal point.

Clean polished wood surfaces using a soft cloth and natural beeswax polish, positioning the piece away from direct heat sources, while gently vacuuming upholstery with a soft brush attachment.
