Nineteenth century oil paintings frequently focused on romanticism, realism, and detailed landscape depictions with dramatic lighting and atmospheric perspective.

Artists typically utilised ground oil pigments applied to prepared wooden panels, canvas, or thick artist boards, housed within gilt gesso or carved wood frames.

Authenticity is evaluated through examining pigment composition, canvas or board ageing, craquelure patterns, frame construction, and historical maker marks or signatures.

These works add historical depth when hung as focal points on neutral walls, paired with minimalist modern furnishings to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and dusting gently with a soft, dry brush.
