Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century portraiture, particularly during the Georgian period, focused on recording the social status, lineage, and likeness of sitters through formal attire, detailed coiffure, and structured lighting in oil on canvas.

These works were executed using hand-milled oil pigments applied to stretched linen canvas and mounted within carved or moulded timber frames finished with gold leaf gesso.

Authentic period portraits exhibit age-appropriate craquelure across the paint layer, original stretcher construction with period fixings, and historical costume detail such as lace cravats, bonnets, and powdered wigs.

A pair of historical portraits can be installed symmetrically above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to establish visual anchor points and introduce architectural character to contemporary or traditional schemes.

Canvas paintings require positioning away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and direct heat sources. Dust frames using a soft, dry brush and consult a professional picture restorer for surface cleaning.
