FAQs

A lit bateau, translating to boat bed, is a style of bed characterised by scrolled head and footboards resembling the hull of a boat, originating in France during the neoclassical and Empire periods.

These beds are traditionally constructed using a solid timber frame, frequently veneered with exotic woods such as mahogany, flame mahogany, or amboyna, often accented with gilt bronze mounts.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional French polish finishes, heavy solid wood construction, and secondary timbers consistent with the period of manufacture.

A lit bateau functions effectively as a sculptural daybed in a study or living area, styled with neutral or textured upholstery to contrast against the rich timber frame.

Preserve the finish by keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying natural beeswax periodically, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
